Interstitial PDT treatment of cancers
Interstitial PDT is a two-step process:
The light is transported to the tumor via optical fibres. The activated sensitiser reacts with oxygen to form highly toxic radicals such as singlet oxygen, which induce cell death. Neither the photosensitiser nor the light or tissue oxygen exerts any effect until they are combined.

First the necessary concentration of the light activated drug is attained in the target lesion, then the drug is activated with a specific dose of light of a particular wavelength.
